sofia alani | Co-Chair

Sofia has served as Co-Chair of the Mosquers for two years and has been on the board since the 2017 festival. She works in the non-profit field in the area of community safety and wellbeing and co-founded the Muslim Feminist Collective of Edmonton. Sofia is active in several community spaces in Edmonton, and teaches an anti-racism course for Muslims. She was one of the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation’s Top 30 Under 30 for 2021, and she co-hosts the Mosquers original podcast, “The Halal Gap”, with her Co-Chair.

As Co-Chair, Sofia plays a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic vision and direction of the Mosquers, while also managing various portfolios and cultivating strategic relationships to facilitate organizational growth. Collaborating closely with her co-chair or co-captain, Sofia works diligently to provide unwavering support to the team members.

Sofia's journey with the Mosquers began in 2016 when she attended her inaugural event, an experience that left an indelible mark on her. Witnessing her culture and personal experiences being represented and celebrated in such a profound manner deeply resonated with Sofia, highlighting the immense power of authentic representation. This revelation not only underscored the significance of storytelling but also emphasized its ability to foster empathy and love among individuals. Compelled by this transformative encounter, Sofia was instantly captivated and determined to contribute to the Mosquers' mission. Being an ardent fan of movies and television, she saw an opportunity to merge her diverse interests and became an integral part of the organization. Sofia feels immense gratitude and considers herself fortunate to have been a part of the incredible Mosquers team for an extended period, cherishing the shared experiences and the impactful work they accomplish together. With her continued dedication and unwavering commitment, Sofia has contributed significantly to the Mosquers' success and its ongoing mission to promote diverse representation and foster unity.
