Abdulmajid is a community volunteer, landscape and night sky photographer who loves the outdoors. He’ll be showcasing some of his photos at the event.
Ahlaam Farah is a Somali-Canadian artist who uses Veiled Dreams as her nom de plume. Her paintings are mainly comprised of abstract and landscape art. Through highschool, she took many art classes where she was able to experiment with new techniques and use different mediums to express her inner-thoughts. After years of being in a long distance relationship with her art, she was finally ready to take the relationship to the next level in 2014. Since the status change she has shared her art on social media and at many local events such Mosquers' Popcorn and YEG TheComeUp's pre-conference mixer. As a painter, she works with acrylic, oil, resin, as well as different mediums to give texture to her art.
Aisha is a 24-year-old Registered Respiratory Therapist and mother to a 4-year-old boy by day, and an aspiring writer by night. Aisha has had a passion for writing from an early age and successfully published her first poetry book in December 2019 that pays tribute to her recent experiences with toxic love, loss, and self-actualization.
Amina is a first-year University of Alberta student in the faculty of arts, the youngest of two siblings and born and raised in Amiskwaciy. Her parents are both immigrants from Somalia and her poetry has themes of home, belonging and the struggle of reconciling her culture with who she has become. She is passionate about reading, not failing out of school and poetry.
This is Fatima, a Somali-Canadian political science student at Macewan University. She may be at school full time, but on the side Fatima loves to sing and act and has since the age of 6. In 2017, she participated in her school musical, and in 2018 she was able to play a lead in her school musical. She is an avid music lover, who loves artists such as Anderson .Paak and Burna Boy, but also artists such as John Mayer and Harry Styles.
Jostina is an Ethiopian-Canadian woman who was born in Germany. She is new to writing poetry, but as a natural storyteller she has always loved it. Her poetry draws on her experiences as a black woman, that is part of the diaspora. Her inspirations include Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Maya Angelou and many others.
King Kontoh is an active independent music artist from Edmonton. As co-founder of the Inspired Minds collective, King Kontoh has done shows at numerous venues across the city and started a clothing brand as well. An alumni of the University of Alberta, Kontoh graduated with a degree in arts in 2019. King Kontoh is a man of many talents, as he is also an actor and creator at KontentKlub, where he shoots comedy skits. King Kontoh has 3 music projects officially released on all streaming platforms and is gaining traction every day.
Muna has been drawing and painting since before she can remember. It’s her escape from reality and comfort when things get rough. Right now Muna is completing her degree in Chemistry at the University of Alberta but she is hoping to concentrate on her art once she’s done. Events like these allow her to put time into something she loves and helps her share her art with you all.
Nasra graduated from U of A’s Nursing program in 2019, this was the same year she started to pursue comedy. She always loved making people laugh as a child and went from being the class clown to an actual comedian. In her free time she can be caught getting food and enjoying long car rides with her day 1’s jamming out to music. She is honestly SUCH a vibe.
Saida Barre, also known as Sai Bar, is a Somali-Canadian poet, performer and a creative director. Sai has found love in creative writing since childhood and started developing her work in spoken word poetry. Since 2009, Sai Bar has performed in several spoken word showcases in Western Canada including her first show that she has created and performed along with other artists called Poetry on the Beach in Vancouver, just to name a few. In 2017, Sai released an EP called Blue which consists of poetry and jazz about love, pain, and healing, produced by Harley Small, A-Tone, and music composed by Harvey Paris. Sai Bar has also created video content for her poetry which are available on YouTube and has an upcoming live visual poetry showcase and installation in fall 2020. Slave of Most Wise is Somali-Canadian poet, comedian, and an all around performer. At the event, he will be lighting up the stage with a few of his spoken word pieces.
Timiro Mohamed is a Somali spoken word poet. Her practice is rooted in responsible storytelling and celebrates her many identities. She is one of the poetry Editors for The Drinking Gourd which highlights the voices of Black Muslim writers, national semi-finalist at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word, co-author of the chapbook Water and Edmonton’s Youth Poet Laureate.
