Filmmaking Workshops

The Mosquers is thrilled to present its first ever step-by-step multi-day workshops! These workshops are intended to help aspiring filmmakers learn the basic ins and outs of filmmaking. Led by Edmonton-based filmmaker and photographer, Abdul Malik, whether you’re a beginner or advanced, each workshop will provide you with practical skills that you’ll be able to utilize throughout your filmmaking journey!

Plus, all of the workshops are free! You can attend as many workshops as you want, whether you’re looking for help with specific facets of the filmmaking process or you want the full crash course of film production. At the end of the workshop series, participants will also get the chance to showcase their films for their friends and families, and the best film will receive two VIP tickets to the 2020 Mosquers Film Festival!

Here’s the full workshop series breakdown:

Workshop 1: Creating a Story

Developing a story is the first step to creating any film. In this workshop, you will be given the chance to brainstorm your own idea and bring your story to life! You will also learn techniques about storytelling, overcoming writer's block, and mapping out your idea.

Workshop 2: Scriptwriting

 Scriptwriting is the next step to bringing structure to your idea. Here you will be taking your idea and manifesting it into a script! You will learn techniques on how to map out your story and format your script, how to write engaging dialogue, and how to think and write visually!

Workshop 3: Film Language

It’s now time to visualize your film! Film Language is all about the visual themes you want to portray in your film. In this workshop, you’ll be learning how to incorporate these themes in your film, as well as visual information, and what the basic techniques/principles of film language there are. In the end, you’ll also be able to try this out yourself!

Workshop 4: Camera Technique

Knowing how to work a camera is probably an important skill to have if you’re thinking about making a film, luckily we got you covered! You’ll be learning the different styles of angles, what different shots mean, how to create a consistent style of shots, and making the most out of your shoots. Cameras will also be provided for you to try out these techniques yourself!

Workshop 5: Lighting

Having the right type of lighting can make all the difference in your film. Here we’ll be learning the different types of lighting, making lighting look good, how to shape/create light, using light on people, and much more! You’ll also get a chance to test this out yourself in different areas with lighting as well.

Workshop 6: Editing

It’s time to edit your film and bring it to life! You’ll be learning the different stages of editing, basic colour correction, layering music and sound, how to use editing software, and more. This will take place in FAVA’s editing suite where you’ll be able to visually see for yourself and also try it out on your own film!
